Mate Preparation
Mate can be brewed in the traditional South American manner
using a Gourd and Bombilla, or in the more familiar ways that most North Americans prepare tea or coffee. To prepare mate using a Gourd, fill the gourd about 1/2 full with mate. Next, wet the mate with cool water (this keeps the hot water from destroying the the flavor). Finally, add hot (not boiling) water, and enjoy.
Another method that will be more familiar with most is using a french press. The french press is perhaps the easiest method. Like the method
above care needs to be taken to not destroy the nutrients and flavor of mate with boiling water. Add the desired amount of mate to your french press. Add enough cool water to completely cover the mate. Allow the mate to absorb the water, then add hot (again, not boiling) water.
Mate should be allowed to steep (brew) for at least 5 to 10 minutes.
