Rooibos (pronounced 'roy-boss') is an Afrikaans term which literally means "red bush". The scientific name for the plant is
Aspalathus linearis and it is a member of the legume family of plants.
Rooibos was first reported in 1772 by botanist Carl Thunberg. But even before that, the indigenous people of the Cedarberg region of South Africa. Cultivation for commercial sales began in the 1930s. Beyond tea, its purposes include natural hair dye, a meat tenderizer, and a substitute in almost any recipe for the water or milk.
The health benefits associated with rooibos are partly due to its antioxident properties. Rooibos has also been linked to relief of hay fever, asthma, allergies, and insomnia.
