The Royal Birds
My name is Princess. I am a Tangerine Pearled Dove. For centuries, doves like me have been a symbol of peace, gentleness, and love. Although I can fly, I am a seed-eater and prefer to spend most of my time walking around my aviary looking for my favorite seeds. I am very good-tempered and intelligent, and a very good influence on Angel when she gets huffy. My breed is characterized by our rusty-red bodies with white flight feathers tipped with tangerine and white neck rings (rather like a pearl necklace, I like to think). I try not to get my loveliness go to my head – some of the plumage on our guests is even more impressive.
My name is Angel and I am a Pied Ringneck Dove. If you thought I was a pigeon you’re only half wrong. The only clear distinction between us is size, though I’m sure you agree that for being small pigeons, we really are quite attractive and elegant. Like most birds, we prefer to live outside and quite enjoy the changing seasons and the fresh air. Did you know that we are the only type of bird that can drink water without tilting back our heads to swallow? We also have a reputation for getting our feathers ruffled. You may notice that I often huff and puff when I get excited.
